My studio group at the MSA is called Prototype #01, we take material as a primary resource from which we aim to develop various possibilities of tectonic assembly and the exploration of architectural space.
Experimental workshop processes are utilised to investigate ways in which ‘analogue’ hands-on making can inform the use of ‘digital’ contemporary technologies. We are interested in the development of a material practice that connects thinking and making.
The studio is structured as a design led collective and as such experimentation within a workshop environment is encouraged. Material research is recorded in the form of ‘made’ books alongside an ongoing digital archive. Material investigation and making techniques culminated, in session 1, with the design and production of one-to-one prototypical replicating components, some of which can be seen in the photographs above. In session 2 the process of material investigation concluded with a one-to-one construction project.
In the Summer of 2010 we built Reflective Room, as a part of an internal competition. This was a part of the one-to-one construction project which fully involved students at both the design and build stages.
